Kate Chopin was born in St. louis on February 8, 1851. As a child she was nicknamed the "littlest rebel" for tearing down a Union flag. She raised six children and managed the family plantation in Natchtiches, Louisiana on her own after her husbands death in 1882. Her first novels were received with little opposition and won her a respect among famous writers. She was a very open minded writer and focused on the reality of life. The Awakening was considered scandalous and prevented her from joining the St. Louis Fine Arts Club. The Awakening was also banned from libraries. Due to the bad publicity and criticism, Kate gave up on writing.
